SI 487: UX Design Senior Capstone Project
1st Gen Engin (FGE)
1st Gen Engin (FGE) is a program in the College of Engineering for 1st Generation College Students - at the University of Michigan.
These are students who are the first in their family to go to college, specifically in the field of engineering, whose parents do not have a bachelor's degree.
The purpose of the 1st Gen Engin program is to both establish and foster a community amongst the first generation students in the College of Engineering by providing resources, workshops, and events to the students.
As a team, they aim to make the first generation identity more visible among the engineering community and provide support for the unique challenges that they may face in the engineering discipline.
Research Project
SI 487 is a year long course where students are put into groups and then assigned a client for consultation. I worked along side Sein, Xiyu, and Kashaf where we were connected with 1st Gen Engin. We were tasked to renovate their webpage given that it was outdated, lacked content, and had little to none functionality. In the first half of the year, we conducted research through surveys and interviews to gain a fundamental understanding of the program and their needs. We then spent the second half designing and prototyping multiple phases of the user interface and conducted user testing to reach our final design. Below you can find all of the details and the process taken throughout the project.
-
Develop a design that allows the client to easily publish and execute - manage and keep up with making weekly changes.
Develop a design encourages user engagement.
Develop a design that helps elevate the program's public and digital presence to better showcase the resources and community.
Develop a design that is aesthetic, minimal and displays all the relevant information in an efficient manner.
-
1.Determine what information is needed on the website
2. Understand why students joined First Gen Engin Program
